Home is sanctuary. Sanctuary is home. Both can be experienced in form or in emptiness. In form, home might be where you live. In emptiness, home is in relationship to those around you. In form, sanctuary is the place you take refuge to experience peace and wellness. In emptiness, sanctuary is in relationship to the well being of those around you. Neither home or sanctuary belong to us and yet we struggle to belong to them and in them.
This audio retreat highlights the teachings found in the book Sanctuary: A Meditation on Home, Homelessness, and Belonging written by Zenju Earthlyn Manuel and published in 2018 through Wisdom Publications. The retreat includes 8 sessions 60 minutes long including a total of 4 hours of meditation spread out in 10 minute intervals PLUS new updated teachings that are not in the book.
There is also a presentation of poetry from Zen Masters to Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, Mary Oliver to Rengetsu, a Buddhist nun and poet, and songs including a song to Yemaya, African Orisha of the ocean and a chant to Prajnaparamita, Buddhist mother of all beings.
Plus you can send Zenju Sensei questions and comments while you are on your retreat.
Arrange your retreat in a way that works for you: Take a day off and do an 8 hour intensive one day retreat, or two 4 hour retreats, or do 8 mornings, or 8 evenings, once a week on Sunday morning for 8 weeks, whichever works for you. This is a self-spaced retreat, meaning you can access the retreat at any time for the rest of your life.
